Usually around midnight, when everyone was suppose to be asleep, Reese would go out to the lake for a stroll. Or at times, take a quick swim or just sit in the grass watching the stars. Course, only when someone else was still awake in her dorm and would keep an eye on Nathan. Only tonight Dane had said he needed to study anyway so he had taken Nathan with him down into the common room where the little one would sleep while Dane wrote some history paper.
Sitting indian stule in the grass while a soft, but yet warm breeze played with her hair, Reese's eyes were focuded on the water in front of her. At night the lake was every more beautiful than it was during the day, she didn't know why that was exactly. It just was. Or maybe it was the way the stars reflected in the water that gave it that mysterious thing.

Christian had been sitting in the window sill in his dorm when he watched her come out. Much like he did every night around this time when there wasn't someone keeping her. He liked to watch her like this, unnoticed while he admired everything that was Reese Mackenzie. She looked so much more beautiful under the moon, the wind blowing through her hair.
He didn't know what had prompted him to come out tonight, to stand not five feet behind her with trembling hands shoved deep inside the pockets of his jeans. He only ever did his admiring from afar. True, she was his best friend- maybe one of his only friends- but he couldn't scare her away from some silly crush. Christian Tait liked boys not girls. His infatuation with Reese was something that he could not explain.
He tore his eyes away from this goddess like woman and glanced behind him at the castle where his daughter was somewhere in there sleeping soundly next to Addy. That raven haired little girl was another reason why he had never told her, she couldn't be bothered by a man that had a child and Brooke deserved his full attention.
He took a clumsy step towards her, nearly tripping over his own feet in the process. "May I join you?" He mumbled, feeling the heat rising into his cheeks.

Popular girls are not lonely.
It was sort of an invisible law and pretty much everyone on Hogwarts agreed with it. Reese wasn’t miss popular herself, she didn’t want to be popular cause to her that simply did not mean anything. Yet she was liked by a lot of people and knew a lot of people, could call many her friends. Still Reese felt lonely.
Her life was full of family and friends, her son, but her heart was lonely.
The soft footsteps of someone approaching had not gone unnoticed, however she had not been sure who the footsteps had belonged too. A small smile made it to her lips when Reese recognized the voice. Turning herself around a bit she looked up to her best friend. “I would be offended if you wouldn’t honey.” Reaching out her hand to grab his to pull him down on the grass with her.

A small gasp escaped his lips the moment she touched his hand, something that happened more often than not despite how hard he tried to control himself whenever she touched him. He sat down next to her, leaving about a foot of space between their bodies and pulled his knees to his chest. Resting his chin on them as he stared up at the sky. Anywhere but at her. Maybe coming out here was a mistake? His emotions tended to bubble up to the surface easier when he was tired. "H-how are you?" He asked quietly. Only Reese could make someone as outgoing as Chris stutter.

When he had settled himself down next to her Reese pulled her hand back again. Right now she was in a cuddle mood but sometimes it was as if Chris would give out a vibe that she couldn’t come close. Reese wasn’t sure if he was actually doing that or that she just thought that he did. So instead of snuggling into his arms, she just let her hands rest in her lap. “Just fine as always.” She answered softly. Course she was fine, she was always fine, always the girl that smiled and was there for everyone. “So why are you still up? Couldn’t sleep?”

Christian would give anything to be able to take her into his arms and hold her like he knew she wanted. Things like that with her were difficult for him, almost as if he were afraid that if he got too close he would hurt her or something of the sort. He had held her before, they were friends so he couldn't get by with the non touching rule for too long, but that was always in the presence of other people. In public it was easier to pretend.
He shifted nervously in her direction. Only an inch or so. "No..I was just on my way to bed actually. Saw you as I passed by my window. Couldn't leave you out here all by your lonesome now can I? There are scary people that walk this school Miss Mack. You need a big strong man here to protect you if they come.." He smiled weakly. It wasn't a complete lie. He had seen her, but he also had watched her without her knowledge every night for as long as he could remember.

Reese had no problem with reading people. She could usually tell when someone was bothered with something, tried to hide something from her, was upset or anything else for that matter. Reading people wasn’t hard but sometimes reading Christian actually was. She knew he was good at hiding things, well at least for her cause it might be clear for Christian how he felt about the Gryffindor girl…but Reese had no clue. For all she knew Chris was her best friend and he saw her as his friend. Nothing more and nothing less.
“Is everything okay Chris?” she could tell something was going on in the way he was behaving but she wasn’t sure what it was exactly. Reese nodded slowly, “Hm, yeah…but I got you to protect me.” Sending him a small wink, she ran a hand trough her hair. “But unlike many other girls around here I do know how to kick ass.” adding that a moment later. Growing up with two brothers had taught her how to his like a guy. Not hitting as in slapping someone but throwing a fair punch, even hard enough to cause some serious bruising.

"Everything is fine" Christian replied a bit too quickly than what he would have liked. There wasn't anything wrong with him except for that empty hole in his heart that was aching to be filled. By who he wasn't quite sure. He tried to play off his haste, keeping his eyes low as he twirled a blade of grass around his finger absently. He forced a chuckle at her claim to be able to kick ass.

Jake had stolen her heart and had broken it when he had died. Leaving nothing but a girl with a car crash of a heart behind on the world. Now, one and a half year later that still had not changed. There had been no one else who had managed to glue the pieces back together. Would someone be able to do so at all? Reese wasn’t so sure, nor was she sure if she deserved love in her life. Cause whenever she was granted some, it would be taken away just like that a moment later.
“I thought best friends didn’t lie to each other.” He wasn’t fine but he didn’t need to tell her what was wrong. He just shouldn’t lie about it. “I’m worried about you Chris…” she had been for the last two weeks now but he obviously didn’t want to talk about it. At least not with her so she hadn’t asked.

"I'm not lying to you" Christian replied casually. He looked at her then, for the first time since he had announced his presence. "I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be?" He wrapped his arm around the middle of her back, giving her a small squeeze to prove to her that there wasn't anything she should be worrying about. It took all of his self control to do so.

She scooted a little closer to him and studied his face for a brief moment without saying anything. “I don’t know, maybe cause you refuse to look at me when I talk to you?” which she wasn’t used of him doing. She shrugged, “You’re just a little different tonight, that’s all.” Maybe she was seeing things that weren’t there?

Or maybe she was seeing things that were there all along? "I have no idea what you are talking about Miss Mack. There isn't anything different about me tonight..I hope" He glanced up at the sky as he spoke, it was easier that way, and then back at her. Shrugging. "How's my boy? I haven't seen him in awhile. Good, I hope?" He asked as a change of subject.

She sighed softly but just nodded, letting him win the game. Fine, she got the hint and would stop asking about it. At least for now. Yet she still had that feeling something was off but what it was, or why…she had no idea. “Yeah, Nate is doing good. He’s growing like crazy. And Brooke?” Brooke was the most adorable girl she had ever seen, she was so sweet and yet fiery like her daddy. “Why don’t we let them play together tomorrow?” Nate and Brooke could lay on a blanket on the grass while Chris en Reese herself would be right there with them, spending some more time together.

"Brooke is alright..she's still having trouble adjusting to life without her mum..but she's doing better than what she was before. She's crawling now..it excites her to be able to follow me around now.." Christian replied, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He had won full custody of the little girl only a few weeks before, he was still learning how to adjust to this new life himself. "Sounds like a plan"

“You’re doing a great job with her, she really is one amazing little girl. Really? Crawling?” the idea of that turned a small smile on her lips. And she really couldn’t wait for Nathan to be able to do the same. “I can’t wait for Nate’s first steps and words. What do you think Brooke’s first will be?” She hoped Nathan’s firs word would be momma or something cute like duck –the shape of his favourite stuffed animal-.
