Reese blinked when Chris made his little mix up but was glad he corrected himself soon enough. He meant it well, she knew that but Nathan had only one daddy. And he was gone. Following Chris she sat Brooke up in a position the girl could still hold on to her Reese’s shirt and yet she her daddy and Nate. “Yeah, that’s my boy Brooke.” Reese said with a warm voice while she smiled at her own son. Boyfriend and girlfriend hu? Wasn’t that kind or ironic after last night?
But before she could respond Nathan was already trying to reach out for Brooke. A smile was present on his face and he kicked his little legs in excitement again. Nathan was a true people’s person and even though he was as little as he was he already loved to be around others.

Yeah that was kind of ironic, but since he couldn't have a Mackenzie then he would make sure that his little girl got the chance. Brooklyn shied away from the hands that were reaching out for her, tiny fingers tightening on Reese's shirt. It had been a long time since she had last seen him, not that that mattered much. They both had been too little to even notice each others presence. But today she was upset and wasn't in the mood for people. Not yet anyway, she needed time to warm up. "Mommy!" She whimpered, wide hazel eyes snapping up to Reese.
Christian did a double take as Brooklyn spoke, his face -if possible- turning an even darker shade of red. She had made the same mistake as her father. He gave Reese an apologetic smile, wishing that the awkwardness between them would just disappear already.

For a split second she froze. Mommy? Hearing that leave the lips of any child that wasn’t her own was sort of weird. Reese could feel the little girl turning away from Nathan, trying to hide herself in the older woman’s arms. Instinctively Reese’s arms made a protective barrier to comfort the child. Her eyes soon found those of Christian and she smiled back at him, faintly. “It’s okay..” she whispered, letting Christian know she wasn’t angry or anything. It may be a little weird and it was probably something they needed to talk about but for now it was fine.
Gently brushing her fingers over Brooke’s head she looked down at the little girl. “Nathan likes you Brooke, he just wants to play with you. It’s okay.” she smiled a little, but didn’t force Brooke to go reach out for Nathan. Brooke would eventually see for herself that Nathan just wanted to play.
Reaching out for her own boy Reese brushed her finger over his cheek in a loving manner. Happy that Nathan was willing to play with Brooke. Maybe the two of them would grow up to be friends. Although Reese hoped that things would never get weird for them as they were for Chris and herself right now. “You’re such a good boy Nate.” Wasn’t he a sweetheart?

It took Brooke a moment, her face buried in the confines of Reese's chest, but she eventually lifted her head up once more to look at Nate. He wasn't that bad. He was much smaller than she was so there wasn't anything to be afraid of. She was a big girl, she knew how to defend herself against other kids if need be. She glanced up at the mother of this child and then back at the boy, her pout matching her father's almost perfectly. "Boy.." She repeated quietly.
Christian laughed though it ended almost as abruptly as it had started, sounding much too forced than what he would have liked. He groaned, laying Nathan back down on his blanket before he curled into a ball and rubbed at his temples. Nothing was okay and it wasn't going to be okay until they got everything cleared up. He felt like he were going to explode inside if things didn't get fixed soon.

Reese smiled when Christian laughed. She hoped that meant the tension would go away and yet she had it all wrong when his laughter came to an abrupt end. As did her own smile. “Yeah honey…boy.” she whispered, pressing a kiss on top of the girls head. A moment later Reese sat Brooke down besides Nathan on the blanket. Hoping they would keep themselves busy for a few minutes. Looking at both children Reese whished she could live a carefree life like those two could. They had no idea what was out there for them just yet.
Taking a deep breathe Reese turned sideways, her eyes wandering from the kids over to Christian. “Talk to me Chris.” Well, here they went. All she could do now was hope that today wouldn’t be as bad as last night. “This awkward thing between us, it has to go.” It was just too weird and it was upsetting the both them.

Reese turned to him but it was several minutes before he was calm enough to look up at her again, another weak smile flickering across his face briefly before disappearing. "I don't know what to say Miss Mack.." He whispered quietly. "What do you think I...no we..should do to make it go away? I'm sorry for bringing it up last night..I'm such an effing idiot.."

She shrugged, not knowing what they could do to solve it all. She was just as upset about all of this as he was. The only difference was, that she had learned to keep it hidden inside. A lesson she had learned the hard way. “Don’t say that Chris. You’re not an effing idiot or anything like that.” Running her fingers through the grass her eyes looked from Chris to the grass, to the kids and back to Chris again. “To be honest, I’m glad you brought it up. We shouldn’t keep things like that inside, even if it made last night weird.”

"Why shouldn't I keep things inside? Letting you know messed everything up, didn't it? I've been hiding it for years. I'd rather pretend that everything is alright then have it not be.." He shook his head, glancing over at Brooke. She had crawled all the way to the far edge of the blanket with Nate's duck, staring at the boy with her nose wrinkled. She wouldn't be acting that way if Chris hadn't upset her this morning to begin with. Another thing he was at fault with. "What do you want me to do Mack?"

Reese still did not understand why they couldn’t be together, couldn’t love each other. “I’m still here Chris, I’m not going anywhere. And as far as I’m concerned we’re still friends like before.” In life you needed to take chances if you wanted the things you dreamed about at night. Didn’t Chris wanted to take a chance? “Ain’t that the same? Pretending that everything is alright still makes it all not right in the end.”
Nathan suddenly cried out, his face showing he was about to break out into tears. That duck Brooke was crawling away with was holy to him. It was his toy he dragged along with him wherever he went. Reese ran a hand through her hair and sighed softly. “I want you to tell me why we can’t be more than best friends. I want the truth.” she answered his question while she reached out to grab Brook and the duck.

Brooklyn blinked as the toy ducked was snatched out of her hands and she turned wide eyes onto the woman who took it from her and then to her father. Another pout formed on her lips and tears began to well up in her eyes. She didn't understand why she couldn't play with it too. That wasn't fair. But she didn't start bawling yet. No, she was saving it, letting it build up before she released it on them all. Which happened the moment she crawled into her father's waiting arms, smacking her hand in Reese's direction to show that she was angry with her.
Christian held the crying girl tightly to his chest, gently rocking her in hopes that she would calm down again. He really couldn't take all these crying babies today, his nerves were already shot enough. He didn't like the way Reese had handled the situation, but he wasn't going to mention it now. No need for another fight. "Maybe because I'm afraid? Because I don't want to disappoint you? What if it doesn't work out? I don't want to be like one of those couples I used to make fun of who break up and become mortal enemies. You are the only person I have Reese..I can't lose you like that..I can't.."

Reese had not meant to snatch the toy away but only wanted to give it back to Nathan and give Brooke something else to play with. Instead the girl had decided to get angry with her and crawl into her fathers arms before Reese could replace the toy. Oh great. Now she kept one baby from crying and forced the other into tears. This day wasn’t getting any better was it? Handing the duck back to Nathan who –thank the lord- kept his tears inside, Reese conjured another duck for Brooke. Putting it on Chris his knee so the girl could reach for it if she wanted to.
“Don’t you think I feel the same? That I’m not scared or afraid to lose you? Chris we don’t know what will happen if we don’t give it a shot. I mean what if we miss out on something amazing?” She couldn’t force him and she wouldn’t try to seduce him into anything either. “But I guess if that is how you feel then there is not much I can do about it can I?” Reese wanted someone who truly wanted to be with her, someone she didn’t need to convince. Maybe Chris wasn’t meant for her, maybe they were meant to be best friends and nothing more. No matter if that idea of that hurt, maybe that was what they were suppose to be. Best friends.

Brooklyn stopped crying vocally at least though silent tears still ran down her cheek as another duck was placed on her father's knee. She picked it up, examining the toy for a moment before throwing it aside. It didn't have the same feeling as the other one. "No!" She was so stubborn, just like her father.
Christian didn't need convincing. He knew exactly what he wanted, Reese Mackenzie. He had wanted her since the day he found out about her and Jake being together. It had started as a jealous crush but then blossomed into something more over time. But he found it so hard just to reach out and take what was laid out in front of him. For obvious reasons. "I know that if we never try that we might miss something amazing but..I've never been someone's boyfriend before Reese. I really don't want to disappoint you. I'm no Jake.." He repeated the words from last night.

Reese did not respond to Brooke throwing away the duck. Fine. If she didn’t want it then she didn’t want it. But there was no way Reese would keep conjuring up new toys till Brooke was satisfied. It just didn’t work that way.
“Look, I’m not going to sit here and try to counteract every reason you give me for not wanting to be with me.” Wasn’t telling someone you loved them enough anymore? “I love you Chris. For the guy that you are. And if that is not enough for you than I don’t know what else would be.” After the words left her lips her eyes watered up a little but she managed to smile faintly. Only to let her eyes wander of to the grass in front of her, forcing herself to keep from crying.

"Who said that I didn't want to be with you Reese? I want it so bad that it hurts. But I keep battling internally with myself between what is right and wrong instead of listening to what my heart tells me to do. I'm tired of being alone Miss Mack..I can't take it anymore..it's just hard ok?" Christian replied, wiping his eyes on the back of his free hand. Maybe he should start listening to his heart soon? He sat Brooke back down on the blanket next to Nathan, crawling forward to sit on his knees in front of Reese. Leaning in so that his face was just inches away from hers. "I really do love you"

“You keep giving reasons for not being with me. What else am I suppose to think Chris?” her voice soft, tired. Bringing her hands up to her temples she rubbed them softly, just wanting things to be resolved soon. She couldn’t deal with all of this for much longer. “Wrong?” she repeated what he had just said. “You think us being together would be wrong?” Talk about a slap in the face right there! She looked up, right when he had moved to sit in front of her, their eyes locking for a brief moment. “I know honey, I don’t doubt that you do.”
