Christian sat with his back up against a tree in the middle of the garden. It was a nice day out, unusually warm despite the season. Unfortunately that did nothing to boost his spirits. He held Brooklyn to his chest, her screams echoing across the lawns. She had been doing that for well over an hour, screaming for her mum.
And yet his daughters desperate pleas to get as far away from her father as possibly wasn’t the reason he now had tears welling up in his hazel eyes. He had lost his best friend the night before. Lost her because of some stupid feeling that he wasn’t supposed to have. The feeling of being alone was beginning to suffocate him.
“Please..shush..Daddy’s here..It’s just going to be me and you forever remember? You don’t want to leave Daddy too do you?” He cried.

Last night had been crappy, this morning had been crappy and now that it was just after lunch the day was still crappy. And Reese would almost bet on it –if she had money to bet with to begin with- that tonight wouldn’t be anything else but crappy as well. Right now life sucked, love sucked and it sucked that things were messed up with Chris. But what could you do except trying to forget the day before and just take your son to his play date?
Holding her baby boy in her arms Reese made her way down to the gardens with a baby bag hanging on her shoulder. A few diapers, his bottle, a blanket and a stuffed duck was all that she had with her for him. Hopefully things wouldn’t be as awkward on the play date as she was scared they would be. But there was only one way to find out right?
From afar Reese could already hear the cries from Brooklyn before she had reached Christian, approaching him from behind. “Hey…” her voice soft when she let the bag drop into the grass.

Christian jumped as Reese appeared out of nowhere from behind him, quickly wiping away all traces that he had been crying on his sleeve before she could get a chance to see. This didn't work out too well for Chris. He was far too broken and upset to be able to will himself to stop crying. Stupid ugly emotions. He wished he didn't have them. How in the hell was he supposed to act normal around her anymore?
He sat up a little straighter, gently rocking Brooke in his arms in hopes that she would stop crying. Especially in front of Reese and Nate. If one baby cried the others all did as well, or so he had the misfortune to find out. "Hey.." He mumbled, keeping his eyes low to hide his tears. He honestly hadn't expected her to show up.

Being a bit unsure of what to do or say after witnessing Chris jump after she greeted him, she decided to just sit down. There wasn’t much else she could do besides walk away cause she was nervous. However that was rude. And even if things had gone weird last night he was still her best friend. Or so she hoped he was. With Nathan in her lap –who thank the Lord was still quiet- she glanced at Chris for a moment, to only notice he was avoiding eye contact.
Yeah. Things were definitely awkward.
With a faint wave of her hand the baby bag opened and a blanket soon covered a patch of grass. “There you go…” she softly said while laying Nathan on his back on the soft blanket. The little guy just silently looked at his mother and went to grab one of his feet with both of his tiny hands.

Christian took a chance and glanced up at her, noticing how she was acting like nothing had happened at all. He couldn't pretend to be that cool. Brooke wasn't letting up, despite all of his efforts to quiet her down. All he wanted to do right now was to scream at the awkwardness he felt between his best friend and his failure as a father, as much as he hated to admit it he was failing. "Will you please help me?" He croaked in defeat, his rocking becoming more vigorous. "She hates me..everyone hates me.."

Even if it might look that she was acting cool, deep inside Reese was screaming at the awkwardness to go away. Last night she had tried to figure out what had happened between them but eventually it all got even more confusing. The kissed, told each other they loved one another and they sort of fought. You were not suppose to fight, you were suppose to be happy! But why did she have the feeling Chris wasn’t all too happy about this? And that thought made her heart hurt. Reese just didn’t understand.
While she was busy with fetching Nathan his little stuffed duck Reese tried not to pay attention to the crying Brooke. Not cause she didn’t want to, but Chris was her dad and he was taking care of her. She looked up as Chris asked for her help. Reese nodded and carefully took Brooke from his arms. “Brooke doesn’t hate you Chris, no one hates you.” She knew for a fact she didn’t hate him herself.
Holding the little girl in her arms Reese smiled at her. “What’s going on with you today honey? There’s no reason for you to cry like this…” not that a baby could answer those kinds of questions but sometimes a warm voice could help children calm down. And if not, well than Reese would just put her down besides Nathan and let him work his magic on calming her down.

Christian wished that he could get Reese to truly understand what he was going through these days. He was happy that she said she loved him back, positively thrilled actually, but it wasn't right. Friends weren't supposed to feel this way for each other. He was afraid that if they did get together or something that if they broke up they wouldn't be friends anymore. It would most likely be one of those nasty break ups where everyone hated each other afterwards, knowing his luck. He would rather sacrifice his heart than lose his best friend.
Brooklyn was taken from his arms and suddenly he was at a loss of what to do with himself. He settled for pulling his knees up to his chest and wrapping one arm around them, sliding the index finger of his free hand into Nathan's tiny fist. He shrugged off her reassurance. People hated him, he knew they did. "She's been screaming for her mum for the better part of an hour..I don't know what to do. It's never been this bad.." He mumbled quietly. He did know one reason why, she was feeding off of her father's negative energy.

Reese knew how Christian thought people hated him. Which she thought wasn’t true. Why would they hate him when he was such a sweet guy? They just didn’t know him and the ones who didn’t want to didn’t know what they were missing out on. So what if Christian wasn’t like any other guy out there? She was sick and tired of those kinds of guys anyway. Chris was just Chris, himself, and she loved him for it. He was an amazing guy she wouldn’t trade for anyone else in the world. Something she told him dozens of times before already.
Nathan suddenly giggled and kicked his legs when Chris decided to give him some attention. Holding the older guys finger he tried to pull it towards his mouth to suck on it.
“Sometimes babies cry just cause they can or have a bad day like anyone else has every now and then.” Or because they could feel their parent was upset. Something Chris definitely was in some way after last night. That she could already see by the way he was sitting in the grass or the sound of his voice. She gently brushed the wet tears from Brooklyn’s cheeks and held the little girl against her chest, softly rubbing her back. “Nathan does the same sometimes. It’s nothing to worry about Chris.”

At least somebody here seemed to have taken a liking to Chris. He forced a weak smile onto his face as Nathan giggled. It had been awhile since the last time he had seen the little boy, he would definitely make his father proud if he could see how big he was getting. He didn't look up at Reese as he took him into his arms, holding him against his chest much like he would do his own child. He was afraid Reese would get angry with him if he made any eye contact. A childish fear. "It's my job to worry.." He mumbled. "She doesn't want to be with me.." Brooklyn's cries started to die down as Reese rubbed her back, turning into soft whimpers. This was something else that she needed, a woman's touch.

Everyday Nathan was starting to look more and more after his father. The same smile, the same likings to certain colours, sounds and people. Sometimes that was hard when he reminded his mother of his dead father. But at other times it made Reese smile. Nathan cried from excitement and tried to grab Chris his sweater now that he had both his tiny hands free again.
“Brooke is used to live with her mom in a different place. Everything is different for her now. Smells, colours, toys…everything she knows is different. That is not a bad thing but she has to get to used to it. That just takes some time.” Her eyes rested on Chris who clearly had decided not to look at her. Something that hurt but she didn’t show. “It will be alright, you’ll see.”

Christian sighed and nodded his head slowly. Maybe he was worrying a bit too much about Brooke hating. Reese was right, she was in a different environment now and needed time to get used to things. He caught Nathan's hands again and brought them to his lips, pretending like he were going to bite them just to get him giggle. Brooke always got a kick out of that one. "Will you accept my apologies Reese? For last night? I'm an ass.."

Someday, in the future, Reese wanted to have a baby girl of her own. Nathan was her world and she was so grateful that Jake had blessed her with a beautiful son. Yet when she would have a good education, a steady income and maybe a potential boyfriend/girlfriend, Reese wanted to have a baby girl too. However her dad wouldn’t be very glad with another grandchild this soon. And neither would Reese herself, she knew she couldn’t raise two babies at the same time on her own.
For a moment Reese stayed silent, but then nodded. “Yeah, if you will accept mine. I haven’t been the nicest person either.” For calling him an ass, for yelling at him, for some other things she had said. Would this be it? All that was going to be said about last night? Would they just try to forget it, never talk about it and just be friends? If so, then Reese wasn’t sure if she could do all of that so easily.

Christian didn't want this to be it. All of his feelings were out in the open now, he couldn't go on pretending as if they weren't there anymore. He didn't think he could go back to the way they were, no matter how much he hated to admit. "Apology accepted.." He nodded, smiling weakly. He reached out to wrap his arm around her, somehow managing to pull the both of them to his side one handedly so that he could rest his head on her shoulder.

Reese scooted along to the side when she felt his arm go around herself. Feeling his shoulder rest on her shoulder she had to blink a few times when her eyes got a bit watery. Her hand travelled up to his cheek to rest there for a moment as she pressed a soft kiss on top of his head. Something she usually did when he hugged her or had wanted to cuddle. Before things would get too weird again Reese pulled her hand back, stroking Nathan’s cheek for a moment who clearly liked all the attention he was getting right now.

Just like normal, Christian let out a small gasp as Reese pressed a kiss to his head. Longing for more although he knew it were wrong. Instead he tried to focus on something else, the boy in his arms would suffice. For awhile. "Lookie Nate..Dad-- Uncle Chrissy brought your girlfriend to play with you..wanna say hi to Brooke? She needs someone to make her feel better.." He cooed, his face turning red at his little mix up. He couldn't play Daddy with this one. He held the infant up into a sitting position so that he could see Brooke. She had stopped crying now, though her fingers curled tightly into Reese's shirt as if she were afraid to let go.
"Boy.." She mumbled, making a face.
